Frequenty Asked Questions

My Machine Is Noisy/Vibrates.
Why is my refrigerator so noisy?
There are two possible reasons. First, make sure the refrigerator is level (if not, you can easily level it using the instructions in your user's guide). If the refrigerator is level, your floor may not be strong enough. If neither of these reasons is causing the problem or if you need more assistance, please call an authorised Maytag service provider.

Why is my freezer making a sizzling sound?
As odd as it sounds, this is a normal operating sound. It's caused by defrost water dripping on the defrost mechanis. If you need any additional assistance, please call an authorised Maytag service provider.
What causes the clicking sound during the defrost cycle?
Frost-free refrigerators have a defrost timer that will generate a clicking sound when it cycles the unit into and out of the defrost cycle.
My Machine Isn't Working/Keeping Temperature
Why won't my refrigerator run?
Start by taking a look at the temperature control - it should be turned to ON. Then check to make sure the power cord is plugged in to a live (or working) electrical outlet. It's a good idea to check the appropriate circuit breaker and reset it if needed or check the fuse if you have a fuse box. If all of these things check out, your refrigerator may be in the middle of an automatic defrost. If not, please call an authorised Maytag service provider for more assistance.
It seems like my refrigerator is running all the time - what causes this?
There are several possible reasons.
One is that modern refrigerators tend to be larger and run colder than models from years ago. This helps keep the temperature more stable, and keeps food fresher longer.
Another possible cause: If you (or more likely, your kids) open the door too often or keep it open too long, the refrigerator will run more to make up for the loss of cold air.
You should also check the base grill to make sure it isn't blocked. If it is, remove it and clean it, following the instructions in your user's guide.
Also, check the door to make sure it's sealing properly and that nothing (such as a package or a container) is preventing it from closing all the way.
Finally, check your room temperature. If it's very warm, your refrigerator will need to run more often in order to stay cold enough. If you need more assistance, please call an authorised Maytag service provider.
There's warm air coming out from the bottom of my refrigerator - is that normal?
Yes, it's completely normal. The refrigerator's condenser exhausts warm air in the same way that an air-conditioning unit does.
It's too warm inside my refrigerator-what should I do?
Train your kids (or your spouse) not to hold the door open for too long or too often. Either can raise the temperature inside your refrigerator and can use more energy. You might also want to check the refrigerator control to make sure it hasn't been moved or bumped to a warmer setting.
It's too cold inside my refrigerator-what should I do?
Check the refrigerator control, to make sure it hasn't been moved or bumped to a colder setting.
The front of my refrigerator feels warm-is that OK?
Yes. It's designed to feel slightly warm when the humidity is high to help prevent condensation from forming.
How do I check temperatures accurately?
Fresh Food Section - Place thermostat in a liquid in the fresh food section such as a pickle jar. You can use any liquid, just ensure the liquid has had enough time to adjust to the same temperature as the fresh food section.
Freezer Section - Place thermostat inside an item that does not freeze solid in the freezer section such as ice cream to get an accurate temperature. Crisco can also be used, just ensure the item used has had enough time to adjust to the same temperature as the freezer section.
Why is the lower fresh food compartment freezing?
This is usually the result of cool air migrating from the freezer section to the fresh food section when the refrigerator is not running. If air is not being circulated, warm air rises and colder air will fall. During normal operation, there are numerous door openings during the day and if there is an absence of door openings (no one at home during the day) the cold air will have a longer time to migrate from the freezer section to the bottom of the fresh food section.
I Have A Problem With My Dispenser/Ice Maker
Why do my ice cubes seem to shrink?
It's not an optical illusion - they really can get smaller over time. It's caused by cold air moving over the cubes, which causes evaporation. This is normal. You may notice it more when you use less ice, since the ice spends more time in the freezer.
Why isn't my automatic icemaker working?
Start by checking the stop arm. It should be down, which is the ON position. (Refer to your user's guide for more information.) Next, check to make sure the water supply is turned on. Then make sure you have sufficient water pressure. Finally, make sure your freezer isn't too warm for the icemaker to work properly. Try adjusting the freezer control to a colder setting. If none of these tips get your icemaker started or if you need any additional assistance, please call an authorised Maytag service provider.
Why isn't the ice dispenser on my side-by-side refrigerator working?
Start by checking the dispenser to see if there's an ice jam. If there is, break up the ice so it can dispense freely. Next, make sure the icemaker stop arm is down (the ON position). Then check the lock switch, which prevents the dispenser from working, to be sure it's turned OFF. If your dispenser still won't dispense, please call an authorised Maytag service provider.
Why isn't the water dispenser on my side-by-side refrigerator working?
First, check the water supply to make sure it's turned on. Next, check the water pressure. If it's too low, the dispenser won't operate. Finally, make sure the lock switch, which prevents the dispenser from working, is turned OFF. If your dispenser still won't dispense, please call an authorised Maytag service provider.
How soon will I have ice after the ice maker has been connected?
The ice maker will not fill with water until the freezer is cooled to the optimal temperature of 0° F. It may be 8 to 12 hours before the ice maker furnishes any usable ice cubes. It is important to note that the first two or three batches of ice cubes may be irregular in shape and color or may contain impurities from the new water supply piping. Therefore, discard all the cubes from the first two or three batches made.
How soon will water dispense once the water line has been installed & connected?
Immediately. When using the water dispenser for the first time, press the actuator pad for one to two minutes (or ten minutes if the model has a water filter) to bleed the air from the water line. Discard the first five to six glasses of water dispensed. This will ensure pure and fresh water for drinking.
Why is the ice maker not making ice?
There are four main reasons why the ice maker may not be producing ice:
  • Check to see if the stop arm is in the OFF (up) position.
  • Check to see if the water supply is turned off.
  • The water pressure may be too low.
  • The freezer temperature setting may be too warm.
Why does the "change filter" light stay on after replacing the filter?
This is normal. It needs to be reset by following the procedures outlined in your use and care manual.
How do I reset the change filter light?
To reset the CHANGE FILTER light: Press and hold the LIGHT and LOCK pads until the CHANGE FILTER light blinks (approx. 3 seconds). The control is now reset for 12 months or another 416 gallons.
My Machine Has Developed A Leak
My refrigerator's water valve leaks. How can I stop it?
Start by checking the tubing to the valve for a hole or crack. Release the tubing if necessary. Next, check the connection to the water valve and retighten it. This may require Teflon tape around the thread connections. If these solutions don't help, please contact an authorised Maytag service provider for more information or assistance.
My refrigerator ice maker's fill tube leaks. How can I stop it?
First, check to make sure the clamp on the tube is tight. Then, check to make sure the fill tube inside the freezer at the ice maker is not frozen. If it is, try using a hairdryer to thaw the tube. Finally, check to see if the water pressure is too low. It should be at a minimum of 20 psi. For more information or assistance, please contact an authorised Maytag service provider.
My refrigerator's water dispenser is leaking. How can I stop it?
Try checking the connection at the bottom of the freezer door to ensure the nuts are tight. Next, check lines going to the water reservoir to make sure the connections are tight. You'll find the connections in the back of the unit behind the black sound damper.
Finally, check to see if the water pressure is too low. It should be at a minimum of 20 psi. For more information or assistance, please contact an authorised Maytag service provider.
There's a leak underneath my refrigerator. What's causing it?
There are a couple of things you should check. First, make sure the tubing is tight and not cracked. Then, check to make sure the drain pan is in place and not cracked or broken. If these tips don't help you find the source of the leak, please contact an authorised Maytag service provider for more information or assistance.
There's a leak inside my refrigerator. What's causing it?
First, check to make sure the door is closing and sealing properly. Next, check to make sure the fill tube connected to the ice maker is aligned properly and isn't letting water splash. Finally, check to see if the water pressure is too low. It should be at a minimum of 20 psi. If none of these steps corrects the leak and you discover the water is coming from the fresh food sealing, you'll probably need to have the defrost pan checked. For more information or assistance, please contact an authorised Maytag service provider.
My Doors Aren't Sealing/Level
How do I make sure my refrigerator sits level?
Start by unscrewing the leveling legs until they contact the floor. Then, place a level on one of the racks and adjust the legs until the unit is level. If you need more information or assistance, please contact an authorised Maytag service provider.
How do I adjust uneven refrigerator doors?
If your refrigerator doors are uneven, you can loosen the screws at the hinge, align the door and retighten the screws. It's also a good idea to make sure the unit is level. Refrigerators can sometimes settle after installation and become unleveled, causing the doors to be misaligned. If you need more information or assistance, please contact an authorised Maytag service provider.
why don't the refrigerator doors shut automatically?
For child safety reasons, the refrigerator doors are not designed to shut automatically.
My Machine Has A Lot Of Condensation
There's moisture on the walls inside my refrigerator - what's causing it?
This happens sometimes when the weather is especially hot and humid. It can also happen when the refrigerator door is opened too frequently or for too long. Make sure the door is closed properly and the moisture should go away within a few hours. If it doesn't or if you need more assistance, please call an authorised Maytag service provider.
Why is the inside of my crisper too moist?
There are two main causes: hot, humid weather and food that isn't wrapped tightly enough (which not only causes moisture in the crisper, but also causes food to dry out).
How can I keep food from drying out in my refrigerator or freezer?
First, make sure it's well wrapped. Your user's guide has instructions on how to wrap foods to stay as fresh as possible in your refrigerator or your freezer. Next, make sure the crisper is tightly closed - if it isn't, that will allow moisture to escape from those foods. Finally, make sure the temperature control isn't set too cold.
I have a problem with my Lights/Shelves
Why isn't the light inside my refrigerator working?
First, check to make sure the bulb isn't burned out. Unplug the refrigerator before changing the bulb using an appliance bulb of the same wattage.
Next, make sure the refrigerator is plugged into a live (working) electrical outlet. It's a good idea to check the appropriate circuit breaker and reset it if needed or check the fuse if you have a fuse box.
How do I remove the blue, yellow or white clips from the shelf support?
Remove and discard shelf packing clips (if used) located just above each shelf where they hook onto the frame. To remove plastic clips, depress the upper part of the clip, wiggle the clip sideways and pull straight out.
Should I remove all Styrofoam from my refrigerator?
IMPORTANT: Do not remove foam insulation from the vents located in the ceiling of the fresh food compartment. You should remove only the Styrofoam that is easily accessible and obviously used to protect the refrigerator during shipment. If you are still in doubt, please call a Maytag servicer or the dealer from whom you purchased the refrigerator.
How do I replace the light bulb cover?
Covers on most models have clips that need to be squeezed in order to remove the cover.
